The star-studded romance “Valentine’s Day” wooed audiences with a $52.4 million opening weekend, easily grabbing the No. 1 spot over the holiday that shares its name, according to studio estimates Sunday.

“To have a movie titled ‘Valentine’s Day’ on Valentine’s weekend was a no-brainer that absolutely worked,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

Directed by Garry Marshall (“Pretty Woman”), “Valentine’s Day” was a celebrity bonanza. The cast includes Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah, Jessica Biel, Shirley MacLaine, Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner.

“Valentine’s Day” distributor Warner Bros. estimated its love story will be in the $60 million range after Presidents Day on Monday. That would break the Presidents Day weekend record of $52 million set by “Ghost Rider” over the four-day holiday weekend in 2007.

Gary Marshall chatted with E! Online about Taylor Squared’s kissing scene and about what else he’d let Lautner do, that no other director would even think of!

Gary talking about the kissing scene:
‘The first three were nice. By the fourth I think they started going together. I don’t know what the hell happened, but somewhere in the fifth or sixth take they were dating.’

Gary also chatted about casting Taylor Lautner for the sequel: ‘He’s booked until like 2020. He’s too busy.’

Gary Marshall also said said he’ll let Taylor do things no other director will allow: ‘That Taylor can take a grape, throw it up in the air, do a flip and then catch it in his mouth,” Marshall joked. “Nobody will let him do that in a movie, I’m gonna let him!’ [Hmm, I hope he does let Taylor Lautner do that!]

“Sorry Taylor but the movie Valentine’s Day looks lame and desperate,” the New Moon star writes. “It cries out, ‘look we have all the biggest starz in 1 movie pleez watch!’ ”
